DIVE IN: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR YOUR FIRST SHIFT
WHAT TO WEAR
Wear comfortable, active and weather appropriate attire that you don't mind getting dirty. Footwear appropriate for the conditions. Most volunteers wear something like rain/rubber boots (it's a a farm, areas can be muddy particularly after periods of rain!)
WHAT TO BRING
Bring water to stay hydrated and work gloves if you have any! Feel free to bring in fresh lettuce or frozen peas/carrots/corn to be added to their meals for the animals in their morning breakfasts :)
WHERE TO PARK
When you first arrive at the sanctuary, look for the driveway nestled between the forest with a little library by the entrance. Drive slowly and carefully all the way up the driveway (it has only one lane). You can park at by the end of the large detached garage (where the porta-potty is).
WHERE TO MEET
Walk up the hill and wait by the gate. Larry the sanctuary executive director and other volunteers will meet you there there around 9AM. Make sure to introduce yourself as a new volunteer in the Novice Program :)
WHAT TO EXPECT
On your first shift, the emphasis will be on orientation, allowing you time to meet the animals and see some of the daily routine. On subsequent shifts you will be participating more fully in the morning chores. Please note the work is generally physical in nature.
